Eating vegetarian doesn't have to be boring. This vegetarian diet plate offers a mix of tofu with a variety of vegetables and spices.

A vegetarian is a person who does not eat any animal foods, except for possibly dairy products or eggs. So this person would exclude fish, meat like poultry or pork and beef from their diet, and get most of their calories from plant foods. The health benefits to be a vegetarian are actually quite numerous.

Studies on vegetarianism have found that vegetarians have a lower rate of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer – the major killers of Americans in this country. Also, lots of things have been found in terms of their immune strength, they have a greater natural killer cell ability, so their immunity is better. They have a higher intake of many nutrients because they are focusing more on plant foods, which are very nutrient dense foods. They have a greater intake of fiber, which not only helps with elimination, but helps with detoxifying, with getting rid of excess cholesterol, and excess hormones, things that we need to try to keep those levels down in the body. Fiber is very important for that. Fiber is only found in plant foods. Vegetarians also have greater amounts of helpful bacteria in their digestive system.

Health risks for choosing a vegetarian diet are real, especially if a person is not very informed about what it is that they need to be emphasizing in their diet. There are many foods that are vegetarian that are not very healthful, many fried foods, for instance, french fries or potato chips. Even very sugary substances like Coca-Cola are considered vegetarian (whether it’s made from high fructose corn syrup or not.) If someone is emphasizing a lot of those low nutrient foods in their diet, that also happen to be vegetarian, they’re not getting enough nutrition in their diet, they’re not getting enough of the whole food, the whole plant food, that’s going to be most nutritious and most beneficial for reducing disease risk and staying healthy and energized, and all of that goes with that.

Some people, like athletes, may have high protein needs which can be discussed with your doctor or your dietitian. Vegetarians can take steps like avoiding processed flour products in favor of whole grain products and also choosing more of the high protein in the plant kingdom, like beans, peas, lentils, legumes, and soy foods.

Switching over to vegetarianism or just adopting a diet that is more in line with that of a typical vegetarian, whether it be a permanent or temporary program, can really help people lose weight and become healthy in general – give it a try!
