Making Healthy Food Choices

by admin on June 4, 2010

Foods. Of every sort and kind.  There are so many from which to choose.  Thousands of different things to eat.  Thousands of different brands, of different choices.  And how do we make the right ones?  How do we know what are ‘best buys’?  Which foods are best for us?  And which should we eat only sparingly?  Which foods, in short, best fit into the healthy, active lifestyle we’d all like to live?

Well, here’s one big help in answering such questions.  The food guide pyramid.  Built around the different food groups, at a glance, it shows which foods are part of a healthy diet, and at the other end of things, which are best eaten in moderation.

As we see here, grain based foods form the bottom of the pyramid.  They’re the ones we should eat the most and they include such things as breads, rolls, and pastas.  All these foods are made from grains, and they form the foundation of a healthy diet.

The pyramids top, it’s point, that’s where we find the fat, oil and sugar rich foods, it’s best to eat sparingly.  These foods can contribute to such serious health problems as obesity, high blood pressure, strokes, and even some forms of cancer.

As you can see, the food guide pyramid is a big help in planning a healthy diet, but fortunately, it isn’t the only aid available.  Here’s another one that can help us to eat right, the revised nutrition facts label.  Easy to understand and highlighting important information, these labels cut the confusion about what packaged foods contain, and that’s a big help when it comes to following the food guide pyramids recommendations for making healthy food choices.
